Special Olympics BC Vision Statement: Our vision is that sport will open hearts and minds towards people with intellectual disabilities and create inclusive communities all across British Columbia.

The North Surrey Skating club answered the call and started their relationship with Surrey Special Olympics in 1995. We started with one athlete and one coach.  Two years later we had two athletes. Today, we are running a full program with multiple coaches and many athletes.

The program has grown and become very successful. Currently we have 4 athletes who competed for positions on Team B.C. and have been selected to the 2020 Canadian National Special Olympic Games Team. This is very impressive when you realize there were only six figure skaters chosen in total.  We also have many athletes who are in the developmental stages, and some hoping to compete in the near future.  Our special Olympic athletes train one day a week as a team on Special Olympic ice.  In addition, those who qualify for club ice, train fully integrated alongside our mainstream athletes.

The North Surrey Skating Club and Surrey Special Olympics are proud of the accomplishments of these figure skating athletes.  Many of our skaters have World, National, Provincial and Regional titles. Each of the Special Olympic events happens only once every four years and skaters are selected via results to every higher event. Skaters are required to meet high training expectations, attend team camps and team activities to remain part of the Provincial, National and/or World traveling teams.

Some of our Special Olympic skater’s most impressive titles:

  • Marc Theriault is the current Special Olympic World Champion.  In the Open Men’s level (the highest level), he has held four World titles in Men’s Single Figure Skating
  • Alexandra Magee earned a World Title in Level 3 Women’s and a Bronze medal at the Canada Winter Games.
  • Marc and Alexandra together earned a World Title in Level 2 Pairs
  • National, Provincial and Regional Titles have been plentiful for the above skaters.
  • Many of our NSSC skaters have Provincial Titles Including: Stephanie Divin, Jennifer Utendale, Krista Milne, Leah Mak and Jordyn Flamma

We wish Stephanie, Jennifer, Jordyn and Marc all the best as they train for the 2020 Special Olympic National Winter Games in Thunder Bay Ontario.

Also, many thanks to coaches- Tannis, Evan, Jeevan, Elizabeth, Leanne, Shirnah, Tamyra  and many more over the years.

Our Special Olympics Program runs during the Fall/Winter Season.
