CANSKATE PROGRAM

Skate Canada's flagship learn-to-skate program for all ages.

Using Skate Canada's proven curriculum, skaters progress through a series of skill stages while learning fundamental skating skills such as forward skating, backward skating, stopping, turning, and edge control.

Registration for Learn to Skate program is OPEN all-year round.

Basic Skills for Every Ice Sport

CanSkate prepares all skaters with the basic skating skills for success in all ice sports like hockey, figure skating, speed skating, and ringette.

North Surrey Skating Club (NSSC), is a Skate Canada affiliated club and we are proud to offer CanSkate and SkateCanada programs.

CanSkate is Skate Canada's flagship learn-to-skate program, designed for beginners of all ages.

To pass, skaters are required to complete all Fundamental Area ribbons from the corresponding stage. The skill requirements for each Fundamental are indicated on the progress report.

There are 6 stages, each stage is broken down into 3 Fundamental Areas:

BALANCE: forward skills, pushing technique and edges.

CONTROL: backwards skills, stopping and speed elements.

AGILITY: turning and jumping skills

MORE WAYS TO GLIDE

Our Teen & Adult CanSkate program is designed specifically for skaters aged 13 and older who want to learn to skate or improve their fundamental skating skills. Whether you're stepping onto the ice for the first time, looking to gain confidence at public skating sessions, preparing for hockey or ringette, or simply skating for fitness and fun, this program provides a supportive and welcoming environment for older beginners.

Teen/Adult: Specialized learn-to-skate sessions for skaters aged 13 and up.

Teen/Adult Advanced: For skaters who have passed Stage 5 or are recommended by a coach to continue figure skating.

Little Stars Program

Our Little Stars program is designed for young skaters ages 4–8 who can already skate independently and are eager to begin their figure skating journey. As part of the CanSkate pathway,

Little Stars introduces the foundations of figure skating in a fun, supportive, and encouraging environment. Skaters develop balance, edge quality, turns, spins, coordination, and confidence while building the skills needed to progress into our figure skating programs.

Little Stars is ideal for children who dream of learning jumps, spins, and skating performances while continuing to strengthen their basic skating skills.
